Responsible Tourism
Responsible Tourism is tourism ‘that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit'.
Responsible Tourism minimises negative economic, environmental and social impacts. It generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well being of host communities. It improves working conditions and involves local people in decisions that affect their lives.
Responsible Tourism helps to make positive contributions to the conservation of our natural and cultural heritage, embracing diversity. More enjoyable experiences are created for tourists by creating meaningful connections with local people as well as a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues. Responsible Tourism is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence.

What our partners do for responsible tourism
Whilst many tour operators were preoccupied with making ‘eco’-claims, we were busy building genuine conservation initiatives into our business. We have been creating symbiotic relationships between man and nature for almost two decades now, and it seems some equilibrium is finally being gained. By building connections and working with local communities, mutually beneficial relationships are growing; communities are coexisting and protecting wild animals; people are learning how to live sustainably; and rural populations are progressing.

There are many social responsibility projects to consider in Africa. It is an unfortunate reality. Into Africa has its’ own CSR commitment – a major part of which is to support and facilitate CSR projects for visiting groups. A key part of this is matching the right project for both the community and the group. If there is to be an investment it needs to be meaningful and have continuity for the community. Reaching out and engaging with people is most effective.

Takims Holidays is a strong believer in supporting local communities, though education, water supply and health-based projects. The Directors of Takims were founding members of MEDEWELL, a local NGO that specialises in digging wells in areas of the country where potable water is in short supply, as well as conducting eye-camps and carrying out cataract surgeries in remote areas. On Zanzibar island, Takims supports ZIDO, an NGO that spends tremendous efforts upgrading hospital wards with specific emphasis on Children, as well as capacity building for secondary schools on the island. An educated and healthy population is one of the key factors for poverty alleviation.

Travel Wild continues to be a leader in conservations efforts in Kenya and East Africa. Our Managing Director helped found the “Mara Project” in order to clean up the litter found in Kenya’s national parks. Dozens of lodges, camps, tour operators and interested citizens have joined this conservation effort to maintain the cleanliness of the parks and reduce the health risks for the wildlife posed by litter. Travel Wild also continues to support camps and lodges that encourage conservation efforts in their day-to-day operations. Our camps and lodges feature solar-power, locally grown produce, employees from the surrounding communities, reforestation projects, vocational training for the local youth, and more.
